The Build-Up:

How have we been building at the Wesley Foundation through the month of September?

We kicked off this month by tabling at the Fisk University Organization Fair. We were able to meet new students and great returning students. During our time tabling, we were able to give away 100 Tiny Jesuses and a large number of computer stickers! Our table was tended to by our wonderful student president and vice president.

Along with tabling this month, we also kicked off our fall programming. We began with our first event, Rooted and Ready, where students had the opportunity to pot their own pothos plants to grow with them throughout the academic year. Students were able to write their hopes and prayers on the inside and outside of their pots to hold with them as they work to be successful this school year!

Several of our first-year students had the pleasure of attending the Hundred Black Men of Tennessee Chapter’s Top Golf fundraiser; they had a wonderful time snacking, golfing, making new friends, and supporting the mission of 100 Black Men.

The Becoming Chronicles:

How is the Wesley Foundation helping our students become better Disciples of Christ?

This year, we want our community to not only understand our ministry but also to get to know our students. To help with that, every month, we will feature one of our Fisk Wesley students in a Becoming Chronicle. Our first feature is Atlas Jean( AJ) Macon!

AJ is a senior, majoring in Biology and Political Science at Fisk. AJ joined the Wesley Foundation in their junior year and has been hanging out with us ever since!

When we sat down with AJ this month, we chatted a bit about what the Wesley Foundation at Fisk has meant for AJ.

When asked about their favorite parts of Fisk Wesley, AJ Said:

“ I appreciate the space and being able to come ask questions about Christianity, God, and what faith means, and I like being able to do that with fellow students. I think that’s really awesome.”

We also got to talk to AJ about how the Wesley Foundation has played a role in shaping AJ’s past year, where we learned that

“It’s given me a space to be in community with other students, especially students I probably wouldn’t have talked to otherwise, and I have more friends on campus, and I always appreciate that… It also provides the opportunity for me to talk to people who are just a touch older than I am about questions.” Some of the questions AJ has been able to ask surround grad school and life following graduating. We learned that AJ hopes to take a gap year, then perhaps pursue a Master’s degree or attend law school so that they might become a practicing attorney somewhere in the south!

Our final question for AJ was about what they wanted the community or possible donors to know about the Wesley Foundation. To which AJ responded

“ Every single student who is a part of the Wesley Foundation really appreciates it. And you should give as much money as you literally can! Give multiple times a year! Give extra money! Especially because we can feel that. It is a tangible thing that students at Wesley are experiencing. Whether it be just like ‘oh more snacks’ or just the opportunity to go do things. Especially like in celebrating Christ… It helps better the space, so that more students like me and more students who aren’t like me have the opportunity to participate in something like Wesley. And I think that’s like the really big part of it all, is [donations and community involvement help] create the space. I think that is really something to be appreciated, and considered, and a motivator for donation.”

We had a wonderful time chatting with AJ and are excited to continue our journey with them through their final year at Fisk. We hope that you, our community, will join us on this journey so that you can hear more stories like AJ’s.
